WW2 Shipwreck “SS President Coolidge”
Planet Ocean’s Best Diveable Shipwreck
SS President Coolidge
The “SS President Coolidge” was a luxury passenger liner converted to a troop carrier in WWII. Now considered by many divers to be the world’s best wreck dive,
Whilst entering Santo harbour she ran into two “friendly mines” Mortally wounded forward, her Captain ran her up on the nearby beach where she sat upright .
Almost completely intact, you can swim through the numerous holds and decks viewing the reminders of her glorious days as a cruise liner and the remnants of her days as a troop ship.
There are guns, cannons, jeeps, helmets, trucks and personal supplies left by the soldiers, also chandeliers, the beautiful porcelain statue of “The Lady,” and a mosaic tile fountain.
The wreck is covered in coral and is the home to a plethora of sea life such as barracuda, lionfish, and a host of reef fish. And Flashlight Fish at Night
"A night dive on the Coolidge, will rate as one of the BEST dives you will ever experience"
Entering the water at 30 minutes after sunset, you will see numerous flashlight fish, little critters, who normally hide inside the wreck during the day, but on dark nights, are out and about, whilst releasing a pulsing phosphorescent light.
A red light to initially show the way, can now be turned off.
What we saw previously on those nights on the Coolidge, in the cargo hold, and in the windows of the bridge, both were pulsing with light, it was just mesmerizing.
Once completely dark, it isn’t like diving anymore, more like being in outer space!
One young diver who was there, after the dive said,
“it was like walking on stars”.
Night diving on the SS President Coolidge shouldn’t be missed.
